Global Rhythm, CD Review Fanfare Ciocarlia-Iag Bari (Piranha) , 05/01/03 >>
Delving into Romanian Gypsy culture has now gone beyond the easily accessed string bands to document their brass playing. A mesh of Turkish band music combined with Austro-Hungarian habits has made for bands of brass playing dances and the soulful arhythmic doina. One rarely hears such speed in brass playing, but Gypsies often take music to its edge and play with great risk, rarely failing to amaze with rhythm and virtuosity. These are contemporary arrangements, mostly of dances, with a few songs in Romany (their tongue) and Romanian. The notes, while short on content and heavily promoting video and links, give only an inkling of what lies behind this distant Balkan tradition, a rousing experience. Allan Evans
